Having suffered a loss the week before Helsinki RFC were after a resounding victory to bolster their flagging confidence.
Upon arrival at Jyväskylä Rugby Club's grounds you feel the atmosphere of concentration and eagerness. We had brought a strong 22 missing only a couple of regulars. Jyväskylä had not been so lucky having a different squad every week they had only just managed to put together a team. Even with this knowledge HRC was not going to take anything for granted and went to this game like any other.
The previous meeting with Jyväskylä had ended in victory but so far this season we had not stamped our authority on any of the other opponents. We intended to do so this day. Starting very strongly we soon dominated in almost every area. Our kicking game worked well to our advantage and the experience, training and commitment soon shone through. Our fly half, Aki Pentikäinen, struck gold with almost every kick and we soon took a strong lead. Tries soon after came thick and fast with forwards and backs sharing the spoils. A miss thrown line out led to the ball rolling almost along the Jyväskylän try line where Steve, our flanker/temporary winger, leapt and scored one of the easiest tries of his career. Another came from a dodgy bouncing pass from the HRC scrumhalf to the inside centre, Thomas Spencer, who collected it from his boot straps to canter unopposed over the line. An individual effort came from Mika, our flying winger, who chipped, chased and collected to score between the posts.
The final score 5 - 57 showed a definitive victory even against a weakened side and gave much needed confidence for the rest of the season.
